One of the major donors for our business school, a bank, has pulled out and is currently facing charges of breaking federal banking regulatory laws. There are five programs currently in place at the business school, three of which are involved in teaching and research. They have been in existence for the last thirty years. As the head of faculty for the business school, I will recommend to the long range planning committee that the restructuring be directed at the other two programs. These are recently introduced graduate management courses, whose students, totaling fifty in number, can be gradually absorbed within the other graduate business courses. The cuts will therefore have to be effected within the faculty staff of the two programs being phased out. All tenured and non-tenured faculty staff will receive a one year termination notice with full severance benefits. Since their total combined yearly compensations is about as much as lost donor funding, the scaled down business school will be able to survive until other avenues are found to fund new programs. Brief Introduction and Literature Review Diabetic Plantat Ulcers Diabetic myelitis is a group of chronic metabolic diseases caused by insufficient production of Insulin, results in abnormal metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Diabetic mellitus can be classified into Type I or Insulin dependent Diabetic mellitus; occurs due to autoimmune destruction of insulin secreting cell in the pancreas. The Type II Diabetic mellitus or Non insulin Dependent Diabetic mellitus, which is characterized by increase insulin resistant and relative lack of insulin(Kumar et al 2005). It was estimated 381 billion people suffering globally from Diabetics in 2013, among which 90% cases are Type II. The South Asian countries are having the highest number of diabetic patients in the world, with highest numbers in India and China(IDF). The peripheral nerve damage often involved in diabetic patient, affecting 60% of patients with Type I and Type II diabetes. In many instances, most of the patient had already some mild to severe form of peripheral neuropathies at the time of diagnosis (Boulton AJ et al 1998). The symptom in includes numbness, tingling or burning sensation, extreme sensitivity to touch, and insensitive to hot and pain in hands and feet. Diabetic Neuropathic feet- Biomechancial fault. For normal gait, everyone requires the integrated function of sensory and motor functions. The sensory input to adapt and modify the motor output to optimize ideal gait pattern. In addition, there should be a fully functional bone and joints with adequate muscle strength, are also vital(Aminian K at al., 2002). Futhermore, the muscle weakness, anesthesia and loss of proprioception alters the foot biomechanics, often leads to changes in mobility, gait and balance. In this way, peripheral neuropathy directly contributes to joint subluxation and lack of accommodation to ground reaction force. These changes put the patient vulnerable for foot deformities and foot injuries. Foot injuries are being considered as dangerous to diabetics because peripheral neuropathy and superimposed impaired circulation makes wound healing delayed and complicated, increase the risk of repeated infection. These might ultimately lead to amputation of the affected limb. The structural changes occur within the ligament, capsule and tendons of foot joints. The collagens of ligament, capsule and tendon disorganized, lose its elasticity and tensile strength, and become more stiff (Grant WP 1996). The resultant foot joint immobility, leads to abnormal biomechanics, thus further results in either joint subluxation or the risk of injury. Therefore, it is imperative to identify the biomechanical faults are an important component in the overall care of diabetic foot. The biomechanical examination includes neutral calcaneal stance position(NCSP), relaxed calcaneal stance position(RCSP), Rang of Ankle joint dorsiflexion, position and mobility of the first ray, Forefoot to rearfoot relationship, range of motion at first MTPJ, Foot Pasture Index, Functional Hallux test (FHT), Limb length examination and plantar pressure examination. A direct correlation between ulceration and areas of high pressure has been established (Veves A 1992). A fundamental part of the physical examine involves inspection of the plantar aspect of the foot for any discrete or diffuse calluses that may indicate focal areas of high pressure or areas of increased shear forces. The sensory testing with Semmes -Weinstein Monofilaments (SWFs) should be assessed to identify the people at high risk of ulcer. It was found that 5.07 Semmes -Weinstein Monofilaments more sensitive in detecting patient with risks of plantar ulcers(Pham H et al 2000). Foot Orthotics intervention for biomechnical fault The functional and accomodative foot orthosis has been a well accepted method of treatment for patient with neurologically impaired foot for a few decades(C. S. Nicolopoulos, B. W. Scott, P. V. Giannoudis 2000; .H Cross et al,1996; Hastings MK 2006). These foot orthotic intervention decreases peak plantar pressure by evenly distributing the body weight into the ground. Foot orthosis is a biomechanical device that controls the degree of pronation and supination of the foot while walking and running. By addressing the foot biomechanical fault in patients with foot orthosis, not only prevent the plantar ulcers and it also improve their adherence to physical exercise, which can prevent or modify the peripheral neuropathy of a diabetic patient. Exercise and Peripheral Neuropathy Based on published evidence, can benefit from regular participation in mild to moderate aerobic, resistance, and balance activities in presenting the onset or modify the natural history diabetic peripheral neuropathy(Colberg SR 2014; Balducci S 2006). StefanoBalducci, et al found that a significant difference in nerve conduction parameters in Sural and peroneal nerves between experimental and control groups(StefanoBalducci, 2006) Outcome Measure Nerve Conduction Study (NCS) Compound Muscle Action Potentials(CMAP), Compound Sensory Action Potentials(CSNP), and distal latencies of Peroneal and Sural nerve of both lower limbs will be measured as per the standardized procedure((DeLisa, 1994; Misra Kalita, 2006; Nasseri et al., 1998). Vibration Perception Thershold (VPT) Sense of vibration of the plantar side of big toe will be assessed using Vibrometer. There are many published evidence to suggest that vibration perception threshold measure can be effectively and accurately identify risks of diabetic neuropathy(Garrow AP et al, 2006; Catherine L 2010) Quantitative Warmth Cold sensation Assessment Michigan Diabetic Neuropathy Score Objective of the Study To assess biomechanical deviation of foot in preventing foot related problem in diabetic feet. To develop clinical long term exercise regime in preventing diabetic induced peripheral neuropathy To ascertain Orthotic intervention for biomechanical deviation of foot in enhancing patient adherence to exercise programs. To develop a clinical exercise tool to enhance functional outcome of diabetic induced peripheral neuropathy of the feet. To identify the effectiveness of clinical exercise tool to achieve treatment goals To study the reliability and validity of clinical exercise tool in the clinical setting. Methodology of the Study Phase I A systematic review and biomechanical analysis (Deformity, muscle patterns, and plantar pressure) are needed to understand biomechanial and functional aspect of neuropathic feet of a diabetic patient in comparison with healthy subjects. This analysis is crucial in developing an understanding of possible foot orthotic intervention to prevent undue pressure of anesthetic feet during weight being phase of gait. Phase II The effective exercise intervention protocol is needed to achieve desirable treatment goals. Therefore, in this phase, will focus development of the exercise protocol aimed to modify or prevent diabetic neuropathy. Besides, each patient with biomechanical deviation treated with appropriate functional and or accommodative foot Orthosis. Orthotics intervention by means of accommodative / functional foot orthosis for the biomechanically abnormal foot helps the patient in preventing planar ulcers and aggravation of deformity. Besides, the foot orthotic intervention also might enhance the adherence to mild to moderate aerobic, resistance and balance activities. The finding from this study may provide better understanding of long term exercise protocol along with foot functional othosis in preventing or modifying diabetic neuropathy. Few gardeners will spend their precious time to help a sickly plant, knowing it will never bloom, to grow into nothing more than it already is. Yet, there are those exceptional ones? ?Mama? is, indeed, the most tender of hearts to care for this sickly family that, I have no doubt, she knows will never fully blossom into a big, strong, and powerful family. The physical plant she cares for is a symbol for her family in every way. The mother waters the plant every chance she has, as illustrated on page 52. The ability for the mother to ignore all else and cater to this plant can be said, too, about her family. The money, which comes in from her dead husband?s insurance is to be put towards what her family needs, not what she would like to have, what she would wish to have, no, the money is put towards her family?s future. She even tries to protect their pure hearts when she mentions, ?Now don?t act silly? We ain?t never been no people to act silly ?bout no money (68).? Protecting the family from greed, the root of all evil, is the main focus for this gardener of life, just as she would protect the ravished plant from an overwhelming beam of sunlight. Placing a rod behind a plant is sometimes the best way to straighten a plant?s stem, yet the gnarled plant she cares for is still disfigured, as to is Walter. Mama tells Walter, ? [It?s dangerous] When a man goes outside his home to look for peace (73),? in order to straighten his mind out, even though it doesn?t work out all fine and dandy, the effort is made. Without this gardener?s protection, the plant would have been evaporated, long ago, by the insanity that comes with the struggles of everyday life. Literature and Ideals Essay

Definition: Literature is a term used to describe written or spoken material. Broadly speaking, â€Å"literature† is used to describe anything from creative writing to more technical or scientific works, but the term is most commonly used to refer to works of the creative imagination, including works of poetry, drama, fiction, and nonfiction. Why do we read literature? Literature represents a language or a people: culture and tradition. But, literature is more important than just a historical or cultural artifact. Literature introduces us to new worlds of experience. We learn about books and literature; we enjoy the comedies and the tragedies of poems, stories, and plays; and we may even grow and evolve through our literary journey with books. Ultimately, we may discover meaning in literature by looking at what the author says and how he/she says it. We may interpret the author’s message. In academic circles, this decoding of the text is often carried out through the use of literary theory, using a mythological, sociological, psychological, historical, or other approach. Whatever critical paradigm we use to discuss and analyze literature, there is still an artistic quality to the works. Literature is important to us because it speaks to us, it is universal, and it affects us. Even when it is ugly, literature is beautiful. Importance of Literature. It is a curious and prevalent opinion that literature, like all art, is a mere play of imagination, pleasing enough, like a new novel, but without any serious or practical importance. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Literature preserves the ideals of a people; and ideals–love, faith, duty, friendship, freedom, reverence–are the part of human life most worthy of preservation. The Greeks were a marvelous people; yet of all their mighty works we cherish only a few ideals,–ideals of beauty in perishable stone, and ideals of truth in imperishable prose and poetry. It was simply the ideals of the Greeks and Hebrews and Romans, preserved in their literature, which made them what they were, and which determined their value to future generations. Our democracy, the boast of all English-speaking nations, is a dream; not the doubtful and sometimes disheartening spectacle presented in our legislative halls, but the lovely and immortal ideal of a free and equal manhood, preserved as a most precious heritage in every great literature from the Greeks to the Anglo-Saxons. All our arts, our sciences, even our inventions are founded squarely upon ideals; for under every invention is still the dream of Beowulf, that man may overcome the forces of nature; and the foundation of all our sciences and discoveries is the immortal dream that men â€Å"shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. † In a word, our whole civilization, our freedom, our progress, our homes, our religion, rest solidly upon ideals for their foundation. Nothing but an ideal ever endures upon earth. It is therefore impossible to overestimate the practical importance of literature, which preserves these ideals from fathers to sons, while men, cities, governments, civilizations, vanish from the face of the earth. It is only when we remember this that we appreciate the action of the devout Mussulman, who picks up and carefully preserves every scrap of paper on which words are written, because the scrap may perchance contain the name of Allah, and the ideal is too enormously important to be neglected or lost.

Core Concepts of the Four Traditions of Geography Geographer William D. Pattison introduced his four traditions of geography at the annual convention of the National Council for Geographic Education in 1963. With these precepts, Pattison sought to define the discipline by establishing a common vocabulary in the geographic community at large. His goal was to create a lexicon of basic geographical concepts so that the work of academics could be easily interpreted by laymen. The four traditions are the Spatial or Locational Tradition, the Area Studies or Regional Tradition, the Man-Land Tradition, and the Earth Science Tradition. Each of these traditions is interrelated, and they are often used in conjunction with one another, rather than alone. Spatial or Locational Tradition The core concept behind the Spatial Tradition of geography relates to the in-depth analysis of the particulars of a place- such as the distribution of one aspect over an area- using quantitative techniques and tools that might include such things as computerized mapping and geographic information systems, spatial analysis and patterns, aerial distribution, densities, movement, and transportation. The Locational Tradition attempts to explain the course of human settlements in terms of location, growth, and in relation to other locales. Area Studies or Regional Tradition Unlike the Spatial Tradition, the Area Studies Tradition determines as much as it is possible to glean about a particular place in order to define,  describe, and differentiate it from other regions or areas. World regional geography, along with international trends and relationships are at its center. Man-Land Tradition The focus of the Man-Land Tradition is the study of the relationship between human beings and the land they live on. Man-Land looks not only at the impact people impose on their local environment but conversely, at how natural hazards can influence human life. Along with addition population geography, the tradition also takes into account the ramifications that cultural and political practices have on the given area of study as well. Earth Science Tradition The Earth Science Tradition is the study of planet Earth as the home to humans and its systems. Along with the physical geography of the planet, focuses of study include such things as how the planets location in the solar system affects its seasons (this is also known as Earth-sun interaction) and how changes in the lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere impact human life on the planet. Offshoots of the Earth Science Tradition of geography are geology, mineralogy, paleontology, glaciology, geomorphology, and meteorology. What Did Pattison Leave Out? In response to the four traditions, in the mid-1970s, researcher J. Lewis Robinson noted that Pattisons model left out several important aspects of geography, such as the factor of time as it relates to historical geography and  cartography (mapmaking). Robinson wrote that by dividing geography into these categories- while admitting consistent themes do run through all four- Pattisons precepts lacked a unifying focus. Robinson did, however, concede that Pattison had done a good job of creating a framework for the discussion of the philosophical tenets of geography.   As a result, while its not the be all and end all, most geographic studies are likely to at least begin with Pattisons traditions. While not perfect, they have nonetheless become essential to the study of geography since first being adopted. Many of the more recent specialized areas of geographic study are, in essence, new and improved versions- reinvented and using better tools- of Pattisons original ideas.

The previous example illustrates the elasticity of the fast food industry. Supply and demand set the equilibrium price for goods offered by franchises within the industry. Competitors of Wendys must accept the prices established by the consumer demand for the value menu. If consumers didnt respond so positively to Wendys changes, other firms wouldnt have had to adjust prices. On the flip side of this concept, there is no need for franchises to further reduce prices below the current levels.
